Art and Craft of Tripura

Handicrafts of Tripura are similar to Assam and Mizoram. The North Eastern states feature bamboo and cane made handicraft articles. Popular handicrafts are decorated wall panels, room divider, furniture of cane, different decorative pieces using bamboo roots, bamboo dining table mats, floor mats and various other gift items.

Cane and bamboo are an integral part of the life of people living in Tripura. As the relief is suitable for the production of bamboo crops, tourists can see beautiful landscapes covered with bamboo trees. Abundant supply of bamboo leads to a fairly good production of handicrafts that are exported as well. Tripura handicrafts have gained fame throughout the world.

Work of art is inspired by the customs and traditions of a particular place. In Tripura three religions namely Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam have converged to give shape and form to the articles. Because of the changing era, there has been a considerable change in the art forms. Now artisans are also using some contemporary elements to extend the appeal of their products.

Decoratives produced here are paneling, Pot containers, plaques and false ceilings etc. Sofa sets, Lamp Shades, Cane, Dinning Chairs, Garden Chairs, Baby Chairs, Centre & Side Tables, Morah, Apple Morah etc. adorn the rooms of modern houses.

Among utility items there are baskets of various shapes and sizes, mats (chatai), roll mats for window panes, portfolio bags, mirror frames, powder case, hair clips, decorative toys and many more…

The ornaments made of bamboo and canes are also popular for their intricate fabulous designs.
